CABLES, BRACES AND TREE SUPPORTS

Most people cannot identify a potentially hazardous
tree until it is too late.  Our trained professionals
however, have the eye and help to identify and
provide the necessary preventive maintenance
needed to secure trees and limbs that run the risk
of being potentially harmful.  After identifying the
potentially hazardous species, we will recommend
either installing one or more tree cables, braces
and/or tree supports.  Doing so helps to minimize
the risk caused by the most common structural
issues with failing trees:

∙ Structural weaknesses (V-shaped crotch)
∙ Storm damage
∙ Mechanical injury
∙ Rubbing limbs
∙ Long, heavy limbs

Cabling involves installing steel cables between
major limbs to reduce the strain and help support
the tree. Cabling also helps reduce stress damage

from high winds and should a limb or section of your tree fail, cables help to prevent such limbs, etc. from falling into, on or
around your structures and property, reducing the risk of further damage.

Bracing is typically the remedy for trees with large, weak, or split crotches.  Bracing is used to give direct support and reduce
twisting strain on the tree. A metal rod is inserted through the crotch and two more cables are placed above it.

Properly installed cabling systems are unobtrusive
and are largely non-visible to the untrained eye.
However, "out of sight" can never mean "out of mind,"
cabling systems should be professionally examined
once a year and again after each major storm. A
climber should inspect the system every five years
while visual ground inspections will suffice in the
years between.

Tree supports are installed most commonly to aide
in support of significantly low-hanging limbs or at
parts of the tree where there is excessive weight.
Supports will assist your tree with  maintaining a
significant portion of its weight.

After inspecting an existing cable in old oak located just south of Cloverdale,
CA, Dave works to install a through-bolt at one area identified as a potentially
weak spot in this trees crotch.  This cable and through-bolt will be inspected
annually to assure everything is in proper working order.
